Quality Systems | Tips and Tricks for designers

This designer´s guide is designed to help you avoid possible errors in the phase prior to printing and the delays which occur as a result. if you follow our tips and tricks you will avoid errors and problems in handling data and is intended to help you to help us to deliver your printed matter in the form you want on the date you want.

Quality Systems | Section 1 | Page Layout Data

  • The maximum imaging format for the di is 330 x 450 mm. define the page size for the document if you will have a direct benefit from it or set the original size of your document, e.g. a4 or a3, if you want to ensure the most efficient use of paper format.
  • Set the bleed to 3 mm.
  • Make sure that you trap your objects with 0.144 points, if necessary. black must overprint and white must knockout. note that each trapping you create will be printed in the same way as we receive it from you. if you are unsure about trapping, our advice would be to have a proof which would highlight any problems.
  • Specify the correct position and folding style if any.
  • If your product is to be die cut, please specify the cutting area, use a unique colour, call it cutter and set it to overprint.

Quality Systems | Section 2 | Images

  • Convert all image data from rgb to cmyk. for best results we recommend a total area coverage of 340%. save the data as follows:
    ˇ Pc images as tif.
    ˇ Mac images in eps.
ˇ Greyscale images in tiff or eps.
  • Avoid the placement of half-tone images in eps or tiff files.
  • If quarkxpress pages are saved as eps data and placed in another document, send the quarkxpress pages and all the data which are required for this page.
  • Enclose the original freehand document if you have imported graphics from freehand.
  • Scan line images with 1240dpi or higher. this will ensure optimal quality.
  • Set a scan resolution of 300dpi for half-tone images.
  • Only import your scans into a layout program in 100% or lower zoom values. enlargements may impair quality.
  • Turn and scale all images before you import them into your document.
  • Set the image frame background colour, if possible, to white with 0% black in quarkxpress.
  • Create curves in photoshop.
  • Do not save any screen information and separation curves in your photoshop document.
  • Remove any extra alpha channels and unused paths.
  • Name all images uniquely; avoid using names such as scan1.eps. A good example might be [your job no]red lorry.eps.

Quality Systems | Section 3 | Fonts and Lines

  • It is important to tell us all the font names. take a little time to check all your illustrations to find the fonts used in them.
  • Supply all printer and screen fonts used on job.
  • Select a font from the font menu. do not use any style options on the apple macintosh if possible.
  • Define the lines using precise dimension systems. if you wish to use a hairline, define it as a 0.25 point line.

Quality Systems | Section 4 | Colours

  • Supply us either with a colour proof, a composed laser proof with markings for the various colours or a laser proof with individual markings for each colour separation. regardless of what you decide to supply, supply us with a hard copy in a size of 100%. failure to supply us with a proof takes away our opportunity to check the job for content.
  • Add 50% cyan, 40% magenta and 40% yellow to large black areas. this helps to make the black areas more glossy in your final product.
  • Avoid using rgb settings throughout job.
  • Define all colour names uniformly and use cmyk both in your graphics and in your page layout program.

Quality Systems | Section 5 | Data Directories

  • Tell us the data directories under which you have saved your jobs.
  • Avoid sending us more than one version of any file or scan.
  • Neatly present and separate files and folders.
